Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat, former director of B.U. KOERI Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center, who made significant contributions to earthquake research in Turkey, has passed away

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalafat started his career as a geophysicist at the Seismology Laboratory of Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) in 1984 and served as laboratory chief in the same department until 2004. Then, he became the Director of the National Earthquake Monitoring Center and continued in this position until 2015. Doğan Kalafat continued his duty as the director of the KOERI Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center (RETMC), which he started in 2015, until June 2024.

Doğan Kalafat, who has made significant contributions to the development of observational and instrumental seismology, earthquake monitoring and earthquake station networks in Turkey, pioneered the establishment of the first broadband seismic stations in Turkey with satellite systems and the investigation of faults. He has implemented remarkable projects in his areas of expertise, such as activities on faults and earthquake occurrence patterns, investigation of the earth's crust, earthquake catalog studies, fault plane studies and field observations.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat, who will be sent off with a ceremony to be held at the Fatin Gökmen Conference Hall on the Kandilli Campus at 10:30 on Friday, July 12, 2024, will be buried in the Istanbul Zincirlikuyu Cemetery following the noon prayer to be performed at the Istanbul Zincirlikuyu Mosque.
